 Annabelle "Muggsie" Walker was a gem. When I was a 22 year old first-year P.E. teacher at Valverde Elementary School in 1962, Annabelle was the best mentor/teaching partner anyone could ask for. She took me under her wing and did all the lesson planning and always demonstrated each lesson the first time we would present it to a class. I was surprised that her nickname was Muggsie, because she was such a sweet and caring person. I am sure the name came from her years as a great and competitive softball pitcher in those City Park leagues. I spent three years in the gym with Annabelle before being transferred to my alma mater, South High School. I deeply regret that I did not stay in touch with her and we sort of lost track of each other. I hope the years since and especially into retirement were happy times. Muggsie certainly deserved the best. Muggsie, thanks so much for helping a clueless 22 year old. You were definitely one of my heroes.
