Barbara Ann Sanford Cable, 86, Littleton, Co, died from complication of ALS at her home surrounded by family January 13, 2026. Barbara was born December 20, 1939 in Torrington, Wyoming to Eugene and Valera Sanford with an older brother, Jack. Her family moved throughout Wyoming and Nebraska as her father’s employment changed. They adapted quickly to each new community, which resulted in many friends across the states. They enjoyed family, fishing, hunting, camping and numerous vacations. Barbara was very fond of her Stone cousins and visited them as often as possible. These visits started early in her life and continued throughout her life. In Dalton, Nebraska, they owned a restaurant known for her mother’s cinnamon rolls and fried chicken. Barbara started waiting tables at the tender age of twelve and quickly learned the meaning of hard work.
Barbara graduated from Cheyenne Central High School in 1958. She went to the University of Wyoming and received a degree in teaching. She went on to teach school in Cheyenne, Wyoming where she met Dick Arnold Cable an Air Force Lieutenant. The two would be married June 24, 1964. Their love story would last more than 60 years. Together they would raise three children all of whom loved them dearly.
They traveled the country during Dick’s military service living inTroy, New York, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Montgomery, Alabama, Springfield, Virginia, Cheyenne, Wyoming, Newport, Rhode Island, Colorado Springs, Colorado and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Barbara taught her children to explore each new city learning about the history, the sights and all the wonderful places to find antiques. When they settled in Littleton, they found a wonderful church, enjoyed competing in Bridge games, going to the theatre but mostly spending time with their children and their families. Barbara was a fierce advocate for her children making sure that they were always safe and healthy. She was always their biggest fan going to every soccer game regardless of the weather. She continued this with her grandchildren taking them on weekly fieldtrips during the summers, making sure they would always remain close. This continued with Bronco Sundays where they gathered to root on her favorite team.
In her professional life, Barbara taught elementary school. Later she was a substitute teacher in the various cities they were stationed. In Littleton, she became a well-loved preschool teacher enjoying both the ladies she taught with as well as all her students. After retiring, she played Bridge with a wonderful group of ladies who made her last games as easy as possible as her ALS changed her ability to move.
In the summer she loved to garden, growing both flowers and vegetables. Her tomatoes were amazing. In the fall, her family gathered to climb trees and harvest her apples, pears and plums. She took up china painting. She painted flowers, lions, tigers and bears. Animals were her favorite. Many of you are lucky to have been gifted some of her work. During her mother’s final days, Barbara was her sole caregiver.
There was never a time when her house was not home to two, three or four dogs. She was devoted to them, giving them the best life possible. The dogs came from shelters and we joked that good karma meant coming back as one of her dogs.
Barbara will be deeply missed by those who knew her. Her generosity, creativity, and willingness to try anything will inspire her family. The depth of her love will keep them grounded as they move on without her.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, sisters-in-law, Kayla Ann Sanford, Lois Bosch, Carol Haley, stepbrother Loren Berg. She is survived by her husband, Dick, children Jonathan (Kimberly), Jean Kiel (Steven), Jeffrey (Melissa); grandchildren, Jessica Cable, Julia Cable-Iverson, (Kellen), Zachary Cable, Jacob Cable, Stephanie Kiel, and Katherine Kiel, all of Littleton, Colorado.
