Betty was born on September 24, 1922. She grew up in North Carolina and West Virginia. She graduated from North Carolina State College at nineteen with a degree in Textile Weaving and Design. After several years of employment in design with Burlington Mills, she met and married James Edgar Pegram.
Their first daughter, Pam, was born in North Carolina. By the time Debra was born, the family had moved to Colorado, where Betty's parents lived. With Nana's help with her daughters, she was able to return to school to receive a teacher's certificate. Her 27 years with the Jefferson County Schools began with teaching fourth graders. After a Master's Degree from the University of Northern Colorado, she became a Library Media Specialist.
She traveled extensively in Europe and to places connected to children's literature. For ten years, she gave programs on authors and illustrators. Some of the well known authors were Beatrix Potter, Hans Christian Anderson, Grimm and Michael Bond and his character, Paddington Bear.
After retirement, when warmer winters became attractive, Betty and Jim bought a condo in Florida. Betty lived there for many years after selling the home in Lakewood after Jim's death. As health prevented driving, the next step was independent living in a lovely facility, Westminster Manor in Bradenton, Florida.
Since last year, she was a resident of Atria Inn at Lakewood. She enjoyed the activities of arts and crafts, Bingo and Rummy Kub. Most of all, she enjoyed living close to her daughters, Debbie in Lakewood and Pamela in Westminster.
