Betty Louise Richards passed away peacefully on March 11, 2021, at the age of 99. She was born in Waverly, Ohio to the parents of Marvin and Ruth Monroe. Betty is survived by her sister Ruth Lupton, 3 children Dyanna McHaffie (Norman deceased), Bruce Richards (Michele) and Susan Torkelson, three grandchildren Tristan Torkelson, Sarah Richards, and Ryan Floyd and three great grandchildren, Brady, Dylan, and Tyler Floyd.
Betty was the oldest of 4 children and grew up in rural Ohio during the Depression and attended a one room school. After graduating high school in 1940, she attended Business School and then enlisted in the Coast Guard (SPARS) to serve our country during World War II. Two years later, at the conclusion of the war, Betty was honorably discharged. Betty was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
Betty was married to Warren Richards in Denver, Colorado from 1949 – 1969. Betty worked for over 20 years at Denver Public Schools as the bookkeeper for the Athletic Dept. retiring in 1992. Betty then joined the volunteers at Swedish Hospital and enjoyed spending time with patients and staff working in the Gift Gallery.
Her family was her pride and joy. She celebrated all the accomplishments of her children, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved traveling, spending time with her family, and enjoyed visiting them in California and Georgia.
Betty was a faithful Lutheran and certainly passed that gift on to all their children. We were blessed to have such a caring, protective Mother who left an imprint on all of our lives and was the best Mom anyone could ever want. We were fortunate to enjoy her for so many years. Betty ‘s work on earth was done, and it was time for God to call her home.
Betty was a part of the Greatest Generation, united by not only a common purpose but also common values, faith, duty, honor, economy, courage, service, love of family, love of country, and responsibility for one’s self.
This isn’t goodbye Mom, it’s see you later.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Centura Health Porter Hospice.
