Carl, age 89, was born on November 2, 1935 in Nisland, South Dakota where he was raised alongside three brothers and worked in construction before serving in the United States National Guard.
In 1957 Carl and Sherry were married and moved to Bailey, where Carl worked for the U.S. Forest Service. Between spotting smoke sightings for the Forest Service from high on Devil’s Head Lookout, to many years of hunting the peaks and valleys, and hiking to the high mountain lakes to fish for trout, he knew his beloved mountains well.
In the years to follow he managed Moore Lumber Company and then finished his working career as the Bailey Postmaster for 30 years.
Carl jumped into the community 100%, like he did everything. He was on the Platte Canyon Community Church Board as well as the Platte Canyon School Board, always leading and giving to others without expecting a single thing in return. A truly good man.
The most important thing to Carl was always his family, and he made that easy to see. But a close second was his tremendous passion in serving the Platte Canyon Fire Department for over 32 years. He served as Fire Chief for many of those years, and his legacy continued to be a positive influence in the department after his retirement.
Carl is preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers – George, Calvin, and Norman. He is survived by his wife Sherry, three children – Karen (Seth) Malgieri, Jody (Jerry) Brady, and Chris (Jana) Bisgaard – eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, as well as countless lives touched that he loved and cared for like family.
A hero and a great example to many, he will be truly missed and always loved.
A service will take place June 21st, 2025 at 11am at Platte Canyon Community Church. In the meantime, donations to honor Carl can be made in the form of planting a tree in his name through www.alivingtribute.org.
