Annis Christine “Chris” Smith, age 93, born Annis Christine Chance October 17, 1923 near Paris, Texas, to George Wesley Chance and Annie Bell Anderson Chance. When she was five her father married Pauline, Tony and they had seven more children, (Tony, Paul (deceased), Melba, Gene, Sue, Billy and Bobby). Their father was a farmer and when Chris was a child her family traveled across Texas in a covered wagon following the crops during the great depression. That’s when she learned how to work hard! When Chris was seventeen she came to Colorado where she met Ralph Hasty. They married shortly after. The next year she had her first child, Harry Lee “Skip” Hasty. A few years later they were divorced. When Skip was five she met and married the love of her life Robert James Schuman! Fifteen months later they had FaDonna “Annette” Schuman. Four years later Robert James “Bob” Schuman, II was born. They were divorced after twenty years of marriage. Several years later she was married once more to Andy B. Smith. Andy who had three young sons of his own that she grew to love and help raise. They were Andy L. Smith, Benny L. Smith and Monte R. Smith. Christine had many young people who thought of her as a second mom. All the friends of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren loved her and adopted her into their lives and there are three in particular. Annette's best friends of 54 years love her dearly and have stayed very close to her and they have always called her "Ma Chris." They are brother and sister Mike Hiatt, Karen Hiatt-Bendt, and her husband, Jack Bendt. Her whole life she had a strong love of young people. When she was a young girl, she had wanted to be a teacher and in so many ways, she was.
Throughout her life she never knew anything except faith, love and hard work. As a younger woman she mostly worked as a waitress and in sales of some kind. In her later years she was a professional house keeper and worked into her eighties. She was truly without a doubt one of the most loving, giving, and caring women that ‘God’ ever gave breath too. She always had her priorities in order. First to love and serve ‘The Lord’. The love and devotion to family and friends. Then to always try to never stand in judgment of others. Treat everyone with respect and teach others to do the same.
When she was younger she enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing. She always liked to work outside in the garden with anything. She loved word games like crossword puzzles and such and she loved playing solitaire as well. But her favorite hobby was anything that had to do with the Colorado Rockies. She was truly one of their most devoted fans ever. So much so that for many years she even kept a score book. If for any reason she would have to miss the game it had to be taped.
She had one of the most extraordinary mind and was very, very wise. She was the rock of our family in every possible way and was a precious gift from ‘God”.
Her passing has left a huge hole in the lives of all who knew and loved her, that can never be filled. We will always love and miss you with our whole hearts. Rest in peace our precious Angel! Your loving family now and forever!
If you can come to honor her wear something Colorado Rockies or purple and if you don’t have those things just wear something bright and colorful. It’s a celebration of her life and all she loved and stood for!
