We will always cherish memories of Uncle Dean, including his values, his storytelling, his smile and warmth. His devotion to family was inspiring. In fact, he was a servant leader in so many ways it's hard to think of him as "gone." Much love and heartfelt sympathy to the entire family at this sad time.

When I think of Dean, I remember most how much my mother Valeda, his sister-in-law, appreciated his effort in getting the whole young Gantenbein family to Kansas at least annually for grandparent/cousin time. It was so nice to read about Uncle Dean's whole life. These pictures are a testament to how much he loved his whole family. I especially like that he is smiling or laughing in pictures with family. It is obvious he loved interacting with all of you, and you all cherished him so much.

I loved and respected Dean like no other.  He was the best stepdad any girl could ask for.  I shall miss him terribly.  Until we meet again ... Love and hugs always, Jeanne

When I think of Grandpa I think of strong, wise, kind, loving, fun, family, loyal, honest, hero, brave, faith. He was all of these and more, so much more. You always knew that if grandpa was around you would have fun, you were safe, and probably learn a life lesson (even if you didn't know it at the time). He was always there for his family, even if it meant going to see the Little Mermaid and getting my nails done. My childhood is filled with camping memories, ones that I will cherish forever. He made sure that we didn't drift away as our family got bigger instead just made the bond stronger and I am forever grateful. I couldn't imagine life without our family, as I have gotten older I have learned that our family is not the norm and most families are not as connected as ours and this is because our grandparents laid the foundation to keep us together. Grandpa will always be cherished and his memory will live through all of us. I miss you so much grandpa but I know you are in a better place, until we meet again XXOO

The last time I saw Dean was out at Carlton, KS at Arcena Boyce's home.  We spent a Sunday afternoon reminiscing and catching up on our families and the events of our lives over the past 20 years.  It was a very low time in my life; but as I shared, Dean & Donna were very supportive and I once again felt those strong family ties that I'd remembered as a child when you would all come to Kansas and we'd share a meal together.
Each year after that visit I would receive their annual Christmas letter which again said "family" in so many ways.  Donna, thank you for taking the time to write those and sharing with me all the news from the Colorado Gantenbeins. 
Time marches on, our loved ones pass into eternity to receive their reward, but the memories will always remain in our hearts.  Blessings to you all as you enter into this new season of your lives.

The hospice nurse asked him what he did in his life and Dad said "I worked". As a little boy, he worked very hard on a farm in Kansas until he was drafted into the US Army where he was a decorated hero, he came home and worked as a letter carrier and in his spare time, built his own homes (2) with my Mom. My Dad worked 2 jobs most of his life.  He spent many years working part time at the Arvada United Methodist Church. The halls and sanctuary hold my Dad in them. He built many shelves/bookcases/coat racks/pulpit etc. throughout the building. When I was a little girl I went to work with my Dad a couple of times, I would have to run to keep up with his long strides up and down the hallways. During his time there he kept the building and lawns in meticulous order. The most green and perfect lawns you have ever seen. Not one blade of grass was out of place. People would stop their cars to look at his beautiful flowers.
Dad loved my husband Kim (as he loved us all). Each time Kim would say something funny, Dad would laugh so hard he would choke. I am so thankful that during his last week of life that Kim got to spend the day with him, just the two of them. Dad told me the next day that Kim helped him so much. What a precious time. He left us after 95 years and what a battle he fought towards the end. He said being old was the hardest job he's ever had -yet he never gave up. He didn't know how to give up.  I hope my Dad knows how much I love him, how much he means to me, and how much I will miss him. He is my true North.
