Dean was born in Scottsbluff, NE on October 1, 1956. His family relocated to Colorado when he was a young boy. Dean met the love of his life, Cheryl, at a party during the Arvada Harvest Festival in 1973. Five years later they married, on September 9, 1978. The Harvest Festival holds a special place in their hearts.
Dean and Cheryl purchased their home in 1978, in Thornton, CO. Dean loved this house. He designed and remodeled the house into their forever home. It was truly his happiest place to be, as he said when he came home for the final time. He was so happy to be home and spend his last days here.
Dean was a master carpenter, and a true king of his trade. He poured his heart and soul into the design and implementation of every job. He specialized in custom deck building, and it brought him so much joy to tell his family which ones he built across the city. Dean loved Colorado and spent his life here enjoying all it has to offer. He loved being outside fishing, camping, boating, and most of all hunting. Summers were spent taking his family on camping adventures, complete with the pop-up camper in the back of the truck. He loved the Denver Broncos and has been a devoted fan and season ticket holder for over 20 years. He would record the games and watch them like the players watch film, breaking down every play. He had the opportunity to attend Super Bowl 48 in New York, and despite the Broncos loss, it was an experience he would remember forever.
Dean is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Eunice Hamel, his brother Harold Hamel, his sisters Judith Phillips and Pamela Boden, and his son Derek Robert Hamel. He is survived by his loving wife Cheryl, his sons Dustin (Erica) and Danny (Kelly), his three grandchildren Derek Lee, Rory Ann, and Emery Ann, his sister Cindy Berland, his brother Bruce Hamel as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
