Aunt Erna was very special to me.  My first memories are from the many summer vacations we spent in Denver.  She always made sure the kids had fun things planned and plenty of goodies to keep us well nourished.  She even helped nurse me back to health when I arrived one summer with a pretty hefty case of pneumonia.  I'll always remember how she was so amused by my dad, encouraging his humor no doubt!  She had the best laugh.  She was so kind and caring.  She and her sisters had a bond that was unbreakable.  They supported, encouraged, and even challenged each other, but most importantly they always loved BIG.  I think all of us cousins knew we had a strong force behind us in the form of our aunts who would do absolutely anything for us.  I so wish we had lived closer but I still always knew Aunt Erna was there if I needed her.  After Mom passed away, she would regularly check in on me and my dad.  She taught us that distance doesn't diminish family ties and that family is what is most important.  That is the way she lived her life.  There is a big hole in our family now but we are all better because she has been a part of our lives.  She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.  

My condolences to Bob, Ernas passing will leave a big hole in his heart.

Grandma Erna, 

I remember so vividly the little things throughout my childhood that showed how much you loved me - and all of your grandchildren. While I lived 3000 miles away - you sent boxes of goodies or greeting cards for every holiday - my favorite were the coloring books you’d send - always with the first picture colored and at the bottom a note “From Grandma in Colorado.”  You doted on all of your grandchildren - made everyone their favorite meals, always had chocolate chip cookies waiting when I came to visit, and spoiled me with shopping trips to the mall. Some of my favorite memories are visiting in the summer, taking trips to peck or the Arvada center to play, then sitting on the glider on the back porch and eating popsicles. You always bought the ones with jokes on the sticks and we’d eat them together then tell each other the jokes. At least once each trip we’d walk to Dairy Queen to get a banana split or hot fudge Sundae.  You were always there for me - when my dad got sick you flew back to NC countless times to help him (and me) while he recovered. I’ll never forget your work ethic, your devotion to your family, and your kindness to everyone you ever met.  You will be so missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lingle Family. The Arbogast sisters are a force to be reckoned with. I can only imagine the party in Heaven Aunt Erna is having with her beloved sisters.

Aunt Ernie Gay to me as a child seemed a sparkling sprite among her towering older sisters.  Her lilting voice with its familiar southern drawl was joyful, fun and calming. To me she was an adventurer and independent.  She lived way out west in the Rockies, far from the mountains of West Virginia.  In perspective it mattered not that my own parents flipped my sisters and me  like pinballs up down and all around the states before the age of eight, adventurers in their own rite. We visited her on our way even further west to Oregon.  I could feel as a five year old she was established. She had a house and was raising my cousins in one place.  It felt solid.  I think she was solid.  Years later I made it a point to drive from Arizona so my husband could meet her on our way back east from grad school.  Everyone said it was really out of the way. It was. But she was important to me.  I remember thinking as we drove off that I was happy my mom saved her.  The story was family legend.  Recounted at every family reunion how a miracle happened on Decoration Day when they were both very small children. Two little girls were chasing each other among the tombstones while Grandma cleaned plots and placed flowers there for family that had passed.  When suddenly a giant headstone was tipped over and was about to crush Erna, a tiny toddler at the time.  My mom not much older swooped in and with miraculous strength grabbed  the stone, kept it suspended while their uncles rushed over to grab the child and my mom let the stone fall to the ground.  Story goes that it took three  men to set the headstone right again.  No one could imagine how it was possible.  To me my mom was a super hero.  To them she was an instrument of the Lord to save Aunt Ernie.  Matter not how it happened. It just did.  And now at Aunt Ernie’s death I reflect on how God intervenes in ways that are mysterious and miraculous.  She lived that day so that others would be born.  She lived all these many years.  PTL!

I am so sorry for your loss. Erna and I played Bunko for many years. She was always so much fun to be around,  She was a lovely lady. I am going to miss her very much.
