January 12, 1919 – April 1, 2016
Gus Kitzman passed away April 1, 2016 at Ashley Manor in Ft. Lupton, Colorado.
He was born to Henry and Elizabeth on January 12, 1919 in Loveland, Colorado. Gus was one of 11 children. He grew up in Kuner, Colorado, learning to love farming and knowing the meaning of hard work. This large family is extremely close, enjoying their monthly “birthday” dinners together until just a few years ago.
Gus and Evelyn were married on December 3, 1944. They lived most of their married life in Prospect Valley, Colorado, where they farmed. Gus worked for Evelyn’s father, Walter, and Weicker Farms. He later farmed for Art Hofferber.
Together, Gus and Evelyn raised two children, Katherine Zweck and Dennis (Sue) Kitzman.
They enjoyed their retirement years in Brighton, Colorado, until Evelyn passed in 2007. They were together 63 ½ years.
Gus loved people, life and always had a good story. He was proud of his farming accomplishments with Dennis, especially their Great Western “High Ten” awards. He enjoyed his “winter vacation” working at the National Western Stock Show, fishing, playing cards and marbles with friends and family.
He played a very important part in his grandsons’ early lives. To them, he was Papa and Popoo. Each boy has his own memory of the days they spent together on the farm, fishing, camping or just being together.
To friends, he was “Gusie”, Peter J. and Augie.
Survivors include his children; grandsons, Shane (Teri), Wade Durben, Monty (Misty), and Steven (Christina); six great-grandsons and 2 great-granddaughters; sisters, Esther Messman and Lillian DeCarlois; brother, Edwin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gus is preceded in death by his wife; parents; grandson, Darren; son-in-law, John Zweck; sisters, Emma, Elsie and Olinda; and brothers, Art, Rueben, Alvin and Elmer.
Visitation and Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, April 7, at Olinger Crown Hill Pavilion.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Front Range Hospice, 3770 Puritan Way, Suite E, Frederick, CO 80516.
