Born to Thomas Feng Wong and Ida Kelsey in 1959 in Washington, DC, Janice eventually settled with her family in Denver where her father owned and operated several prominent restaurants including Tommy Wong's Islands in Cherry Creek. Janice graduated from Manual High School in Denver in 1977 and briefly attended Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, CO before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. During her 26 years of service with the Marines she traveled widely and was highly regarded by those with whom she served, rising to the rank of CWO4 before retiring in 2004. Post-military, Janice was employed by Scientific American International Corporation as a Senior Systems Analyst from 2008-2022. She was a graduate of Colorado Technical University.
Janice is survived by her husband of 32 years, Mark McVay, daughters Jula (Brandon) Burnham and Casey (Brandon) Just; her father Tommy (Shirley) Wong, age 98, of Denver; her mother Ida Acton of Phoenix; sisters Gloria (Dave) Heck of Corvallis, Oregon, Dharmata of Mt. Shasta, California, Sharon (Steve) VanBelle of San Diego, and Terese (Ken) Manley of Golden. She is also survived by three brothers, Dan (Nicole) Wong, Mike Wong, Thomas Wong, of Los Angeles, CA. and numerous nieces and nephews.
Janice loved playing games with her four grandchildren, baking cakes on their birthdays, and introducing them to new experiences whether it be swimming in the ocean, or trips to Mile High flea market. She loved to travel and had, in recent years visited Japan, Okinawa, Croatia, Portugal, Spain, Hungary, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland and Scotland. In October, 2022, months after receiving her cancer diagnosis, she walked over 100 kilometers on the Camino Portuguese in northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela. She had also completed four marathons. She was a bright light in the lives of all who knew her and was always there to lend a helping hand to those in need. She was truly a positive force in this world and will be greatly missed.
A celebration of Janice's life will be held on September 16 at her home in Golden, CO. For more information please email Mark McVay: [email protected]
