In January 1951 he was inducted into the US Navy in Denver Colorado. Jerry was aboard the troop ship The U.S.S General Hase to Yokosuka, Japan. He was then transferred to the U.S.S Hokuiam, where the ship was engaged in battle at Wonson Harbor, Korea. Later, he was assigned to the U.S.S Hamul at which point he transferred to the Dental Corp.
On March 8, 1953, he married the love of his life Janet Jean Tekavec and so began their life as husband and wife, while he was stationed in Port Hueneme, California. The next year he was released from active duty on November 8, 1954 and Jerry and Janet moved to Globeville, Colorado. Together they went on to operate Wagner’s Grocery and Market from 1958 to 1970, where they were known for their homemade German sausage.
It was during this time that they were blessed with two children: Tammy on December 6, 1957, and Terry on October 29 of 1962.
Jerry went on to work for the Colorado Department of Agriculture in the weights and measures division for the next 25 years. He retired as Chief Metrologist on December 31st, 1993.
Jerry and Janet’s following retirement years were spent doing many things together and enjoying each other‘s company. They traveled some, practiced woodworking and refinishing antiques, gardening, and helping their children with projects.
Jerry leaves behind a loving wife of 66 years: Janet Jean Wagner and two devoted children: Tammy Painter (Ric Painter), and Terry Wagner (Marilee "Emmie," Wagner). In addition, four adoring grandchildren: Chelsea Painter, Daric Painter (Noemi Painter), Jackson Wagner, and Alec Wagner. He also had four admiring great grandchildren: Shaniah Painter, Yudith Estrada, Quentin Waters, and Emilio Painter.
He was a wonderful husband, an amazing father, a loving grandfather (Papa) and an attentive great grandfather. We were blessed to have his love, guidance, generosity, and affection. Jerry Wagner is loved immeasurably and will be inconceivably missed.
