Joey (formerly known as Josie) Samson passed away at the age of 21 after a lifetime battle with
Congenital Heart Disease on March 2nd, 2022. Per her wishes, she was surrounded by her
family as she took her final courageous breath at her home in Commerce City, Colorado. She
left this world the same way she came in, with her mother (Marnie) and father (Eric) right by her
side.
Joey was born on September 5th, 2000. Shortly after her birth, doctors learned of her condition.
Throughout her life, she had experienced over 50 surgeries, 5 of which were open heart. If you
knew her, you knew she never went anywhere without a smile. From making the entire team of
doctors cry from laughter, to waking up early to get the freshly charged power wheels to ride
around the hospital halls as we followed behind her with leads and oxygen, moments with her
were never dull. Doctors originally estimated she wouldn’t live to see her 5th birthday.
Amazingly, we were able to celebrate monumental life moments with her such as her first crush,
getting her drivers license, first tattoo, high school graduation, and turning the anticipated 21
years old.
Throughout her lifetime of illness she managed to always maintain her positive attitude and
never let her condition slow her down. If there is one lesson she taught us, it was to never take
life too seriously and to laugh as often as possible.
She is survived by her mother, Marnie Samson; her father Eric Samson; her four sisters and
best friends, Kacie, Sydney, Megan, and Christine.
Joey’s funeral service, officiated by Minister Josh Higgins, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday
March 9th at Pratt Parkway Christian Church, 1601 S Pratt Pkwy, Longmont, CO 80504. Her
final resting place will be at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary & Cemetery, 7777 W. 29th Ave in
Wheat Ridge, CO. Please note, the graveside service following her funeral service is a closed
family event. The family will be hosting an open reception from 2:30-6:00 p.m. at Buffalo Run
Golf Course 15700 E 112th Ave, Commerce City, CO 80022.
Memorial donations may be made to 2HEARTS, a nonprofit that provides support and education
for children, youth and families affected by Congenital Heart Disease. Joey was an ambassador
for the 2HEARTS organization for over 8 years and as part of her last wishes, would like all
donations to benefit children just like her. 2HEARTS has expressed that a scholarship will be
created in Joey’s name in the coming year.
Thank you for the love, support and privacy toward the family during this time.
“It was a short one, but it was a good one” - Joey Samson
