John R. Marks, Jr., went home to be with the Lord on September 17, 2021. Born Oct 1, 1926 in Omaha, NE, John served in the U. S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 as an Electronics Technician, and graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Business Administration in 1949 and JD from the College of Law in 1952. While in law school, He married his wife Helen Rosalie Edmonds in 1949. They were married for 71 years until her death September 15, 2020.
After college, John spent his entire career, from 1952 – 1991, with KPMG as Tax Attorney/CPA. In 1965 he became a Partner and was transferred from Des Moines, IA to Honolulu, Hawaii. His career with KPMG took him to countries in the Pacific Rim and Polynesia. He also served as Chairman of Hawai’i State Tax Review Commission, President of the Hawai’i Society of Certified Public Accountants, Hawai’i Estate Planning Council, and Joint trial Board.
John was a man of Faith, integrity, generosity, and kindness. He gave all he had to anyone in need, and he gave from the heart. The more he gave, the more he was blessed. Even with his time consuming, successful career, John found time to live his passion for Missions. For his entire life, he generously supported missionaries and orphanages from all over the world, his local church, and served on Boards of many organizations such as Gideons International, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Teen Challenge and Indigenous Ministries International. In addition, he served as President of International Bible College, and earned an Honorary Doctorate of Theology. His passion was to spread the Gospel of Christ throughout the world.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he was also quite the comedian. He loved to make us all laugh with his silly antics and funny faces. He especially enjoyed spending what time he had with his grandchildren as he enjoyed playing with them; he loved them dearly. He enjoyed golf, hiking, traveling, and body surfing. John and Helen resided in Kailua, Hawai’i for nearly 40 years. In 2004 they left the Islands and spent their last 17 years in Colorado.
John is survived by his four daughters, Marilyn Weber (son-in-law Faris Weber), Carolyn Marks, Joan Marks, Jane Kelleher, and seven grandsons, Scott Reynolds, Bryan Reynolds, RJ Reynolds and his wife Briana Reynolds, Jay Kelleher and his wife Johanna Kelleher, Justin Kelleher and his wife Holly Kelleher, Adam Olinger, Nicholas Olinger, and 9 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, John would have preferred that you make an increased contribution to Alzheimer’s Association or your favorite charity.
