It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Joseph Nillen, lovingly known to many as Topper, who died peacefully on December 10, 2025, in Colorado at the age of 71, following a courageous battle with colon cancer.
John was born on March 24, 1954, in Chicago, to Mary and Maurice Nillen. He grew up surrounded by love, laughter, and friendship, sharing his childhood with his brother Dan and many friends who were drawn to his joyful spirit and natural charisma.
On May 21, 1988, John married the love of his life, Anna Carin, with whom he built a life rooted in devotion, family, and shared values. Together, they raised two daughters who were the pride and joy of
his life.
John began his college education at Marquette University and later finished his college career at Regis University, where his passion for athletics and leadership continued to grow. Professionally, John
enjoyed a successful sales career in addition to his work in athletics. His professional life was a testament to his lifelong dedication to sports, mentorship, and relationship-building. John coached an Olympic qualifying team, served as Head Coach of the CBA Ohio Mixers, and worked as an Assistant Coach for the Denver Nuggets, leaving a lasting impact on countless athletes and colleagues through his leadership, integrity, and encouragement.
A lifelong athlete, John also competed in the Masters International Open for Long Track Speed Skating, earning a third-place ranking. In his youth, he even enjoyed time working as a model, a nod to his
confidence and charm.
John was a devoted Catholic whose faith quietly guided his life. He was known for his infectious humor, his warm presence, and his ability to light up every room he entered. Friends and family will forever remember his laughter, stories, and the simple wisdom he lived by:
“Treat others the way you want to be treated, always work hard, and give 100%.”
John is survived by his beloved wife, Anna Carin; his daughters, Daniella (Marko) and Alexandra (Jack); and his cherished grandchildren, Nikola and Maria. He is also survived by his brother Dan (Dee); nephew Fred (Beth); and great-nieces and nephew Maddie, Cal, and Rigley, along with many extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary (2020) and Maurice (1987).
A Funeral Mass will be held on December 20, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Olinger Funeral, Cremation & Cemetery – Crown Hill, with a Celebration of Life to follow the burial.
Three words that best describe John’s life are Resilient, Athletic, and Loving.
