

LaVerne Elizabeth Mattie Rose was born to Paul Rose and Fay Helen Rose (Jones) on June 28, 1923 in Denver Colorado. She was the first of five children. Her siblings are Paul Leslie Rose (deceased), John E. Rose, Betty R. Rose (Duncan) and Jerome C. Rose. In addition to her parents, she was very blessed to have her maternal grandmother, Mother Elizabeth Jones reside with them. LaVerne's grandmother was the first State Mother for the Church of God in Christ in Colorado. Both Mother Jones and LaVerne's Mother instilled in her from a very early age, the importance of God in her life and she never forgot. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, granddaughter and mother.
LaVerne graduated from Manual High School and was awarded a four year scholarship to the University of Denver to study Art. She was a very gifted and talented artist. She finished two years of school, and then left because her mother needed her assistance with the family. LaVerne worked in the Remington Arms Factory, during World War II, then she worked as a stenographer for Fashion Bar and then as a model for a number of years. LaVerne was the first Black to work as a coder in the Denver Postal System .
LaVerne married James W. Cook, the love of her life in December 1945. LaVerne and James had five children, Debra LaVerne Green, Karen Kay King, Janet Delores Cook, James William Cook, and Denise Lillian Wills. LaVerne spent time cooking great meals, sewing new clothes every week for Sunday school and taking care of the home. She devoted time to her children, to helping neighbors, and helping in the church. Throughout her life LaVerne was a dedicated servant to God and spent much her of time serving and worshiping at the church. She never said no to anyone who needed her help. She was a very patient and loving person.
In 1962, LaVerne and several women who all believed in helping others formed a club called the Dorcas Daughters Club Inc. She was a charter member. The Dorcas Daughters helped those in need with everything from food, clothing, paying utilities, helping with funeral arrangements, visiting the sick and those in nursing homes. LaVerne was an active member of the Dorcas Daughters until her death.
LaVerne loved her children and she was absolutely in love with her grandchildren and great
grandchildren. She leaves behind the following grand and great grandchildren:

William Harley King (Bernice) and children Kyasia, Haley, Harley Jr., and Romeo King
David Vincent King and his children Dante and Elisha King

Micah Cook-Dobynes and her children Jelani, Milan and Darrick Dobynes
Quatisha Riley
Denise McCovy and her children Kalvin, Jay and Shawny Jackson
Camille Cook and her children Keith Patterson and Cameron Cook
Brandon Cook, Franklin, Reggie and Elessia Wills
She also leaves behind a large number of extended family and friends.
