Lois Ann Hellstern (née Hackbarth), aged 78, passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at her residence at Gardens on Quail in Arvada, Colorado. She was born November 15, 1941 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to the late Ruth Ann Stolper and Clarence Hackbarth. Lois graduated as a nurse from Milwaukee County School of Nursing in 1962. She was a care-giver in her heart and soul and it permeated every aspect of her life. She worked as an RN for her entire career, caring for her patients and her extended family with much love.
She was married on May 6, 1972 to the love of her life, Robert Francis Hellstern. Lois was a devoted wife, mother, homemaker, family member and volunteer. She was the consummate hostess, a great cook and adored throwing a good party. She would often organize family reunions and trips and loved being surrounded by her extended family of brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. We cherish the many memories that she created.
Lois was thrilled by travel and shared the love of the journey with her children. She often sat with a drink at sunset and remarked, "This is the life."
Lois was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and dedicated much of her time as an active volunteer, nurse and tutor. She was well-known for her leadership. Church members admired her as a "spiritual giant" and a pillar of faith. She is remembered for her love and the way she served all around her.
Lois's grace and patience in recuperating from a devastating roll-over car accident in 2016 inspired everyone who came into contact with her. She fought hard the last four years of her life and beat the odds of survival.
Lois will be lovingly remembered and very much missed by her husband Robert Francis Hellstern; brother Daniel Hackbarth (Sheila Hackbarth); daughter Elizabeth Ann Hellstern (Owen William Fritts); son David Robert Hellstern; daughter Angela Ruth Hellstern (Charles Durkoop); grandson Isaac Matthias Semmelmann; and many other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her sister Jean Weigand, sister Dorothy Hetzel, brother Donald Hackbarth and brother David Hackbarth who are all there to welcome her to heaven.
The family wants to extend heartfelt gratitude to the care-givers at Gardens on Quail who have taken care of Lois for four years as if she were one of their own.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, August 14, from 4-7 p.m. at the Crown Hill Cemetery Chapel, 7777 W. 29th Ave, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lois Hellstern Scholarship Fund at Bethlehem Lutheran Church (c/o Bethlehem Lutheran Church and School, 2100 Wadsworth Blvd., Lakewood, Colorado 80214) or the Lois Hellstern Future Nurses Scholarship Fund at Gardens on Quail (c/o Robert Hellstern, 15088 W. 63rd, Arvada, CO 80403.)
