You will be missed... though my memories are strong. 

1) When g'ma was living in the apartment across from ours in Lowry, I recall having a conversation with her about going into an independent living facility.  She wasn't looking forward to the move, but was even less excited about the fact that she'd no longer be able to smoke in her own apartment.  She asked me if I would help her quit and wanted it to be a surprise for Mom. I remember thinking there was no way she would ever be able to quit... no way.  But, I wasn't going to say no, so I called Kaiser the next day and got her some nicotine patches.  I brought them over to her along with the nurse's instructions.  I remember helping her put on that first patch and again, shaking my head with the silliness of the whole thing.  I could not have been more wrong or underestimated her more than I did.  She not only quit smoking after more than 75 years, she never had a single cigarette again after putting on that first patch.  It was incredible. 

2) Christmas dinner at our house in 2010, we caught Abby and g'ma playing a secret game with rules only they knew.  They were intensely focused on this game.  So much so, they didn't even notice when we were quietly taking photos from the door into the butler's pantry.  They were laughing deeply, enjoying each other so much.  It was such a sweet and loving moment. I've thought of that memory so many times as we've watched g'ma's health decline.  And, I know Abby remembers it because she's mentioned it more than once since then.  

3)  I can't recall how old I was, but I remember at 7272 E. Davies Pl, I interviewed g'ma for a school project.  It was supposed to be a short "family tree" project that had 3-5 questions or something.  I started talking to her about being a nurse and learned so much more than I expected.  A lot of the questions I had were typical for a kid - don't you hate giving shots? Don't you hate the sight of blood? etc.  But, as we talked about how close she was to her sister, nursing school, being an emergency room nurse, etc. it became clear that nursing was totally natural to her and something she really loved.  She lit up when she talked about it.  She loved working with patients, she loved the hustle and bustle of the emergency room, she had so much respect for the other nurses she worked with over the years.  It was great to hear her talk for so long about this piece of her life I never really knew much about... 

4) During those days when I'd visit her in the Lowry apartment, she spent a lot of time talking about how much she appreciated you, Mom.  She knew the sacrifices you and Bob had made over the years and how she wanted to give you both a vacation somewhere beautiful and exotic. She knew she'd never be able to, but she often talked about it and how much she loved you and how incredibly proud she was of the daughter, wife, mother and grandmother you have become.  She loved spending time at your house, playing mah jongg, winning "all your money" and then quickly losing it again... she didn't need anything fancy from you, but you always made her feel so important and loved. That holds true right up to the very last moments when you were there with her.

 When Ed married my sister Sherri, Mrs Adams also joined our family. She spent all of the holidays at our house. She was a wonderful, sweet and kind person. I feel fortunate that we got to spend this past Easter with her. She will be greatly missed.

You will be very missed, mom, by a lot of people. I am honored that you and I walked the last road together, just the two of us. It was a privilege. I will hold you in my heart with all my love.

I am so lucky to have met Marge. it was obvious that she was devoted to her children, family and to others. She was intelligent, caring and passionate about life. It was an honor to know her even for a brief time. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
