Mark was born May 29, 1932 in Salina, Kansas, son of Wilbur and Christine (Harder) Pfenninger. After graduating from Salina High School, Mark attended the University of Kansas and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1954. He then went on to the University of Kansas Medical School, graduating in 1957, with a Doctor of Medicine degree. He enlisted in the Army for active duty in 1956, and served in Huntsville, Alabama, Wichita, Kansas and Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Aurora, Colorado, where he was discharged as a Major in 1963. He opened Arvada Medical Center, a successful private practice, in Arvada, Co. as an OB/GYN. He later expanded his practice and moved it next to Lutheran Hospital in Wheat Ridge, Co. and renamed it Arvada Women’s Clinic.
In his free time, Mark became skilled at downhill skiing. He enjoyed fly fishing and deep sea fishing with family and friends. Gourmet cooking was a hobby that gave Mark tremendous joy and satisfaction. Golf was a staple in his life and a wonderful source of exercise, but grass did not grow under his feet. He obtained his private Pilot’s license and found a passion for flying private planes. He discovered the wonders of scuba diving with family in Belize, and the excitement of uncovering a Spanish Galleon in other parts of the British Honduras. His travels took him to extraordinary places: ocean sailings, a trek in Nepal and dinner in Rome with the Pope. Mark enjoyed life to the fullest. He and his wife, Shari, traveled the world - always looking for an adventure.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Wilbur “Bill” W. Pfenninger; and one daughter, Deborah “Debbie” L. Myers.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon “Shari” Pfenninger of Prescott, AZ; two daughters, Kathleen Robert of Arvada, Colorado and Mary (Thomas) Doering of Trophy Club, Texas; one son, Bradley (Kathy Leonard) Pfenninger, of Arvada, Colorado; seven grandchildren, Christina Myers (Tea Dildy) of Silver Springs, Maryland, Jacob Myers of Falls Church, Virginia, Ashley Pfenninger of Haslet, Texas, Michelle Robert (fiancee Philip Greene) of Westminster, Colorado, Andrew Doering of Stockholm, Sweden, Lindsey Pfenninger (fiancee Keenan Lilyquist) of Edwards, Colorado, and Sarah Doering of Austin, Texas, and one great granddaughter, Lorraine Lilyquist of Edwards, Colorado.
