Muriel L. Mills

Muriel, known as “Merl” or “Mercile” to her family and friends, was born December 8, 1930 on a farm east of Newkirk, Oklahoma the daughter of Harry and Mellie Johnston (Waldeck). She was raised in Newkirk where Muriel graduated with the class of 1948. She then attended Oklahoma Baptist University for one year. She was united in marriage to Marvin Turner on June 14, 1949. To this union three children were born, Mark, Mitzi and Margo. This marriage dissolved after 32 years.

Muriel moved west to Colorado to work as a nanny and caretaker. While in Colorado, Muriel met Melvyn Mills and married on July 4, 1984. Muriel loved watching and attending sporting events, particularly the Denver Broncos, Oklahoma Sooner football, and the Colorado Crush. She enjoyed recreating on the water and was an avid water skier in her younger days. She loved working crossword puzzles and was virtually impossible to beat at scrabble, unless she decided to let you win.

Preceding her in death were both husbands, Marvin Turner and Melvyn Mills; parents; and brother Harry Wayne Johnston. Survivors include her son, Mark Turner and wife LaVerne of Arkansas City, Kansas; daughters Mitzi Rowan and husband Scott of Gardenville, Nevada; Margo Dailey and husband James Ivey of El Dorado, Kansas; step-daughter Melody Finnemore and husband Barry of Vancouver, Washington; brother, Leslie Johnston; special friend Rebecca Sue Jurgens and her husband Vance of Arvada, Colorado; grandchildren, Amy Turner, Ryan Turner, Dana Kirkbride, Michael Paul Parman, Matt Dailey, Mason Dailey, Sam Finnemore; and adopted grandchildren Lance Hill, Brandon Hill, Brodie Hill and Bryan Acheson; many great-grandchildren and many great-great grandchildren.

Muriel’s family would like to thank the hospice staff at Gracia Hospice for their loving care and friendship.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in Muriel’s name be directed to Gracia Hospice, 7985 N Vance Drive, Suite 308, Arvada, CO 80003.
