Dick was born in Denver, CO, on November 21, 1923 to J. Frank and Berenice Binder (Pearson). He attended Denver Public Schools, graduating from North High School in 1941. He attended Colorado A&M College (now CSU) from 1941 to 1943. He joined the US Marine Corps Reserve in 1942, and was sent by the Marines to the University of Colorado to further his education. He graduated from CU on October 21, 1944 with a degree in Civil Engineering. During his collegiate days, Dick was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, a social fraternity. He also was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Chi Epsilon, Honorary Engineering Fraternities.

Dick was stationed at Parris Island, South Carolina; Camp LeJeune, North Carolina; and Marine Barracks at Quantico, Virginia. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on June 20, 1945. He was released from active duty in June 1946. In 1951, Dick was called to active duty in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He went to Korea, commanded a 105 mm howitzer artillery battery for a while, and was released from active duty as a captain in early 1953.

Dick married Iris Irene Wolfe on June 20, 1948. They had four children, 5 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. Iris passed away in 2012 after 64 years of marriage.

Dick worked for Latimer Construction Co. during his civilian days from 1947 to 1963. He started his own company, Binder Construction Co., in 1964. The company specialized in large pipe construction. Among its clients were the City of Denver, the Colorado State Highway Dept., the City of Arvada, and many water and sewer districts in the metropolitan area. The company finally shut down in 2006.

Dick is survived by : Richard Jr. (Darlene), Douglas (Sharon, Diane), Virginia, and Nancy (Larry). His grandchildren are: Ryan, Nicholas, Shawn, Evan, and Genevieve. His great-grandchildren are: Kayden, Gavyn, Amani, Ava Lynn, Kavya and Lela.
