Ronald Allen Davidson died on Sunday, June 16, 2019 following a long illness. Ron was a prostate cancer survivor and has been living with and fighting through Alzheimer’s disease with his trademark tenacity and good humor for many years. Ron has been an advocate for regular prostate screening, and served to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s research. He was 73 years old.
Ron was born on July 19, 1945 in Monterey, California at Fort Ord, while his dad was on active duty in the Army there. He was the son of the late Elizabeth (Andrews) and Donald Davidson. He was the older brother of Russell Davidson of Arvada and he often shared the many tales of their endless shenanigans growing up. He was a graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School in Denver and joined the Army a year later. He served his Basic Training at Fort Polk, Louisiana and then was stationed at Fort Hood in Texas. During a break before heading to Germany to serve as a tank commander, he would have a serendipitous meeting with a former high school classmate, Kay, at a neighborhood store. Upon his return from Germany in 1967, he would marry Kay (Mugge) Davidson of Denver. The pair celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary two years ago surrounded by family and friends.
Together, Ron and Kay joined the Denver Police Department, where Ron served in a variety of roles, most recently as a Detective, Traffic Investigator until his retirement in 1999, following almost 30 years of service.
Ron was the proud father of Neil Davidson of West Harrison, New York. He shared a love and passion for sports, especially soccer, with his son and was often found practicing with and coaching Neil’s soccer teams or serving as a cub scout leader when Neil was younger. Later, Ron joined an over-40 soccer team so that he could continue to play. Ron was best known as the very proud Pop-Pop or The Pop by two of his favorite people, his grandchildren - Lauren and Zachary Davidson also of New York.
Ron enjoyed many travels and adventures, especially trips to Ireland and Germany, or to visit his grandchildren. He was active in the Colorado Emerald Society and the American Legion Post 11-11, where he was always up for camaraderie with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, a ready laugh, and a pint of Guinness or a little taste of the Irish. He was a gifted craftsman and could often be found in his workshop creating beautiful custom furniture and built-ins for family and friends. He also loved and was loved by many rescued basset hounds over the years.
In addition to his wife, Kay (Mugge) Davidson of Westminster, Ron is survived by his son, Neil Davidson and his wife Heidi; two grandchildren, Lauren and Zachary Davidson of West Harrison, New York; a brother, Russell of Arvada; brother-in-law David Mugge and sister-in-law Loie Mugge of Denver; and several nieces and nephews; as well as a loyal basset hound named Dudley. Ron was predeceased by his parents and his sisters-in-law Theresa Mugge and Susan Davidson.
His family wishes to thank Seasons Hospice and Jaxpointe Flower Court for the excellent care they provided to Ron. A gathering will follow the Celebration of Life at the American Legion Post 11-11 on 9959 Wadsworth Blvd, Broomfield, CO 80021. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his memory be made to the Colorado Alzheimer’s Association - Denver Chapter, 455 Sherman St. #500, Denver, CO 80203.
