Virgie was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She was the type of person who brought smiles to everyone around her. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. Even in her later years, she had her caregivers in stitches with her little jokes. One of the nurses referred to her walker as her “Indy 500”. She couldn’t sit still even at her age and with the constant pain. For years and before her dementia had progressed she’d always say “See you later alligator” when family would leave after a visit.
Virgie's family was very important to her and her priority in life was taking care of them. She loved to dance, listen to Mexican music & music from the 40's-60's. She loved volunteering at her church helping with giving communion, bake sales and making crafts to sell. She had a passion for the seniors in the retirement home she worked. She would take them out to appointments, go buy groceries, do their laundry, mend their clothes or just spend time with them. She loved to cook and her tamales were the best in town and were a favorite of Denver Firefighters where her son-in-law worked. She was never idle and loved spending time with her children, all her grandchildren, and friends.
The nurses in her facility always had a story about her and her best friend Linda Chavez. They were friends for close to 40 yrs Linda is in her early 90’s and they were very lucky to end up in the same nursing home. They were so close that the nurse, Shani, thought that Linda saw Virginia as her child and it was very cute to watch their interaction. Linda’s family welcomed Virgie with open arms and over the years she spent a great deal of time with them.
Virgie’s daughter would always make and bring a large batch of Christmas cookies and coffee cakes for Virgie and the 2nd floor staff. Last year they shared biscochitos (Virgie’s recipe) along with the usual Christmas goodies. According to the nurses Virgie shared her biscochitos with some of the other residents.
Virgie is preceded in death by her parents, Francisco Subia and Luisa Pando, her husband, Gilbert Uranga (2017), her son, Gilbert Taylor (2018), and her siblings, Maria Garcia, Rita Aguilar, Salvador Pando, Francisca Munoz, and Robert Hernandez. She is predeceased by her grandson, Joshua Veloz.
