He was born in Corning, New York in 1942 to Ronald and Helen Wilcox. As a child he looked forward to summer vacations at Keuka Lake where he could play and swim with his cousins. He attended Edison High School in Elmira Heights, New York where he excelled in basketball, baseball, and football. Halfway through his junior year his family moved to Williamsville, New York whick was a totally new but positive opportunity to look at what changes he had to make. At this point “Wally” made lasting friendships with classmates like Frank and Skip (Rolland) who made the transition easier and supported him through hard times with the loss of his mother. Following high school, he joined the Air Force and served in the Air Police until his tour of duty ended in 1964. Wally was then ready to take advantage of some academic programs in the social sciences at Niagara Community College and then transfer to the State University of New York at Buffalo.
During his studies in college, he met the girl he had been waiting for, Carol, at a get together wth old high school friends. She was the only member of the party new to the group and he told the others “that’s the girl I’m going to marry.” Carol thought that was rather out of line and was not particularly interested. Nevertheless, they were married two years later on June 15, 1968 in Amherst, New York. That was one week after Carol had graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo in Medical Technology so Wally could return full time to the same school to finish his bachelor’s degree in Sociology. Upon completion of his degree, Wally became a management trainee at M&T Bank in Buffalo. He trained with a loan specialist who happened to marry a girl Carol was friends with from her Medical Technology school days. They all remain close friends to this day. For the next decade Wally held several managerial positions at various branch banks for M&T, and the Bank of Buffalo until 1978 when the family moved to Colorado. Wally managed several savings banks in the Denver area and across Colorado and became Regional President during his long career. He devoted time and energy as President of the Northglenn Rotary Club, and President of the District12 School Foundation.
Wally was devoted to his children, Kevin and Darren, and especially enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren. Wally was loved as a father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He worked out at the Westminster Recreation Center for as much social interaction as physical fitness so that will be missed. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents Ronald and Helen, sister Janita and is survived by his wife Carol, son Kevin (Jennifer), son Darren (Christy), brother Ronald (Barbara), brother Thomas (Linda), sister Kathleen (Richard), sister Bobbi Vardaro and grandchildren Michael, Emma, Luther, Claire, Tyler, and Carter.
