Wanda LaRue (Johnson) McClure Schul, born on February 20, 1926, in Cushing, Oklahoma, lived a life defined by faith, family, and service. Known for her warmth and generosity, Wanda cherished family gatherings and welcomed visitors with a kind spirit.
The eldest child of Ivan and Edna Johnson, Wanda excelled in school and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1944 before pursuing nursing at William Newton Memorial School of Nursing. In 1947, she met and married the love of her life, Doyle McClure, beginning their life together on Maple Hill Ranch near Manhattan, Kansas.
In 1948, Wanda and Doyle took in her youngest brother, Ronald, exemplifying their unwavering dedication to family. Later, they moved to Grenola, Kansas, where they became active church leaders, 4-H mentors, and supporters of adolescents in need. Despite not having biological children, they opened their home and hearts to many.
After relocating to Winfield, Kansas, in 1989 for Doyle’s health, Wanda continued her service-oriented life. Following Doyle’s passing, she married long-time family friend Clyde Schul in 1992, traveling extensively until his passing in 1997.
In 2008, Wanda moved to Maple Gardens in Wichita, encouraged by her brother Ron. This allowed her to enjoy frequent family gatherings and spirited game nights. Affectionately called "Auntie," Wanda was a competitive player in Racko, dominoes, and other games, bringing energy and enthusiasm to every match.
Wanda volunteered with organizations including Eagle Nest, Union Rescue Mission, Harry Hines Hospice, Via Christi Health Care, and Sedgwick County Department of Aging, often offering companionship to those battling serious illnesses and supporting their caregivers.
Wanda passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025, after a brief illness. She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands Doyle McClure and Clyde Schul, and brothers Walter, Ronald, and Kenneth. She is survived by her sister, Rhodema Spearman, and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.
A graveside service will be held at noon on Thursday, January 16, 2025 at Green Lawn Cemetery, located at 588 Cyclone, Grenola, KS 67346.
