Albert T. Wells, aka “Alley Cat”, 85, of East Hartford, beloved husband for 35 years of Norma Elizabeth (Breen) Mayo-Wells, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, July 22, 2021. Albert was born on December 24, 1935 in Providence, RI and was the son of the late Veronica C. Lewis. In 1952 as a 17 year old Albert had his older brother Lee forge his parent’s signature so he could join him in serving their country during the Korean War. As a youth Albert was an amateur boxer and while actively serving Albert was the lightweight US Armed Service Champion. Albert was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1957 and a few years later in 1960 Albert became a very proud, vocal and long serving member of Iron Worker Union Local #15 in Hartford. Albert was a IW Local 15 member for 61 years where he served on the Executive Board, was a delegate to the IW International Convention, served on the Local 15 Benefit Committee and was a founding member of the IW Local 15 Retiree’s Club. Post retirement Albert loved tinkering and could often be found in his garage usually working on some type of lawn equipment. Albert was an avid boxing fan who also loved and followed professional baseball and football. Albert’s favorite teams were his beloved New York Yankees and New York Giants, he also was a huge UConn women’s basketball fan rarely missing a televised game. In addition to his loving wife Norma, Albert will be forever missed by his son, Dana Wells and wife Elvira of Simpsonville, SC; his daughter, Valorie Douglas of East Longmeadow, MA; brothers, Ron Scopel and Ken Fish his stepdaughter, Lori Mayo-Cabrera and her husband Tony of East Hartford, stepson William Mayo, wife Ellen and family of Waterford; five adored grandchildren, Bret T. Wells, his wife Erika and family, Joseph Cabrera, wife Christiana and family, Emily Riggio, husband Vincent and family, Michael Douglas, R. Thomas Mayo and eight cherished great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Lee Wells; three sisters, Dolly Brown, Corinne Augusta, Mary Ratcliffe and his son-in-law, Michael Douglas. Special heartfelt thanks are extended to Albert’s niece Alicia Smith and husband Bill, Darren McDonald and wife Lisa longtime friends and next-door neighbors who Al loved like family.
Family and friends may call on Wednesday July 28th from 4-7 p.m. at the D’Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter St., East Hartford. Burial with military honors will take place on Thursday 12 p.m. at Hillside Cemetery, East Hartford. In lieu of flowers donations in Albert’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
