the morning of Sunday, October 6, 2019, at the age of 81. Zoraida passed away peacefully with
her family by her side. Her children affectionately knew her as Mami and her grandchildren and
great grandchildren knew her as Mama, Ita and Oma. Both of her parents traveled from Spain
to Cuba where she was born on August 23, 1938. As a young girl, Zoraida moved to Havana, the
capital, and later returned to her hometown where she met and married our father, Tomas.
Zoraida had a deep and unfailing love for children. She was an activist for children along with
our father. After the takeover of the Communist government in Cuba, Zoraida became involved
with the underground movement seeking medicine and food for the sick children, since
medicine and food was practically nonexistent. In 1971, the family traveled to the United
States where Zoraida worked at a local church and later for a major hospital until retirement.
She loved gardening and spending time outside. She loved taking care of the family dogs and
spoiling them with table scraps. Zoraida’s favorite pastime was cooking big family meals. She
had a passion for celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas. She not only loved cooking the food
but also decorating the table.
Zoraida is survived by her loving husband, Tomas, her three children, Cesar, Elia, Hiram,
their spouses, several grandchildren, great grandchildren and many loving friends.
