Born February 1, 1935, in Smithfield, North Carolina, to Thelma Leigh Medlin Day and Charles Pugh Day, Jean was well-loved, especially by her husband of almost 66 years, Edward Simpson Paddison, pre-deceased son Edward (Ned) Simpson Paddison, Jr., and daughter Clair Day Paddison Wier (wife to Dickson Cannon Wier). Jean was known as “Nana” to her grandchildren: Lauren Day Wier Lyon (wife to William Lyon), Edward Cannon Wier, and Eric Dickson Wier (husband to Lauren Linder Wier); her great-grandchildren: Leighton Day Lyon and Madelyn Elizabeth Lyon; and many of her grandchildren’s friends, who considered Nana as a grandmother to themselves as well. Jean was sister to Dorothy Day Austin, who precedes her in death, and Marilyn Day Couch (wife to Douglas Couch), as well as aunt and cousin to many more she loved dearly.
While Jean attended two years at Atlantic Christian College and worked with the International Bible Study group at First Baptist of Columbia, she was most passionate about creating a warm and welcoming home for her family. Jean always made time and showed up for those she loved, and she provided comfort, kindness, and a beautiful smile to everyone she knew. She and Edward worked tirelessly to provide opportunities, entertainment, and unwavering support for their children and grandchildren.
A graveside service is planned for 11:00a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, at Elmwood Cemetery.
