Junior Roy Butler, age 96, of Springport, Michigan, passed away at home on November 1, 2026, with his family by his side. He was born on May 19, 1930, in Homer, Michigan to William Roy and Essa Mae (Slocum) Butler.
After finishing high school, Junior joined the U.S. Army, where his hard-working nature carried him to the rank of Sergeant. He also served as a member of the Corps of Engineers.
Junior was the handyman people called when something needed to be made right. With capable hands and a tireless work ethic, he could fix nearly anything—and he proved it most memorably when he built his own home in 1953 from plans made on a napkin. He lived there for 76 years, a lasting testament to his determination and skill.
Junior also made time for the pleasures that brought him joy: fishing, hunting, and playing softball.
Junior is survived by his wife, of 54 years, Lillian Butler; son, Mark Butler and daughter, Rebecca Northern; as well as, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Roy and Essa Mae Butler; sons, Mike Butler and Jeffrey Spradlin; daughter-in-law, Shelley Butler, and 13 brothers and sisters.
Services for Junior will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Dr. Albion, MI 49224. The family will receive guests for a visitation at 10:00AM, followed by the funeral service at 11:00AM. He will be laid to rest at Albion Memory Gardens with full military honors.
Memorial contributions can be made in Junior’s memory to the Albion Legion, Post 55.
