

Barb led a fulfilled and devoted life both personally and professionally. After retiring in 1998 from a rewarding career at Iowa State University Athletics Department, Barb found joy in supporting the community as a volunteer at Heartland of Story County Meals on Wheels. She was a devout attendee and active member of LifePointe Church where she faithfully served her Lord Jesus Christ.
Barb enjoyed many friendships in the Homewood Ladies Golf League.
Reading was a cherished hobby for Barb. The Bible and any book written by John Grisham were among her favorites. She indulged in TV Shows like Gunsmoke and Professional Golf and was a passionate supporter of the Iowa State Cyclones.
Whether it be dominating a game of Dominoes, Casino, or Bridge or engaging in her favorite recreational activities, her spirit always stood out. Golfing, bowling, and spending quality time with family and friends were treasured moments for her. She was a regular attendee at her grandsons’ sporting events.
She loved her back porch and enjoyed vacations in Branson, Canada, and Hawaii. She was fond of exercise classes and also enjoyed tending to her yard, which kept her active.
Some of her greatest accomplishments include being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and being recognized as Cy's Favorite Alum.
Barb was known for her sweet and kind personality. Her actions reflected “Be Kind to Everyone”.
Barb was predeceased by her husband, William (Bill) Houk; her father, Robert Warren; and her mother, Rusty Warren. Survivors include her son, Dan (Jane) Houk; her daughter, Kerry Houk; her grandsons, Jeff (Michelle) and Eric Houk; her great granddaughters, Makenna and Olivia Houk; her brother, Terry (Peg) Warren; her sister, Patricia Morrison; her nephews, Billy Warren and Aaron (Taylor) Warren, Michael Morrison, Mark (Desiree) Morrison and Tim Morrison. Barb's memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those she left behind.
A Celebration of Life for Barb will be held on Monday, May 18, 2026 at LifePointe Church with a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Service at 11:30 a.m. with lunch provided afterward.
A private family burial will be held at 9:00 a.m. on the same day at Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Barb's legacy will forever be one of kindness. Indeed, the world is a better place because Barb was in it.
