Christian J. Derks, Jr., 85, of Ames, died Friday, November 5, 2010 at Mary Greeley Medical Center, following a brief illness. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, November 9 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames. Burial will follow in Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Christian Derks was born October 7, 1925, in Stanberry, Missouri to Chris and Margaret Derks. He married Patricia Anne Holiday on September 1, 1951.
He served during WWII (1943-1946) with the Air Transport Command in Burma and India theaters of operations. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant.
He attended Creighton University and the University of Omaha in business administration. He was a real estate broker and appraiser for the VA and FHA. He retired in 1991 from the Iowa DOT, after 25 years as a review appraiser. He was a member of the American Appraisal Society.
He is survived by six children, Cheryl (Allan Lines) Derks, of Omaha, NE, Sally (Stew) Moore, of Ankeny,IA, Mary Sue Derks, of Kansas City, MO, Nancy (John Christensen) Derks, of Stanhope, IA, Jim (Carrie) Derks, of Eden Prairie, MN, and Jane (Joe) Hahn, of Ames, IA; and ten grandchildren, Sean Moore, Alexandra Moore, Kaylee Hahn, Ethan Hahn, Nathan Derks, Riley Derks, Henry Derks, Jeremy Derks, Cody Christensen, and Jenny Christensen.
