Dolores Arleen (Hughes) Roland was born on March 18, 1930, to Edgar E. and Nora Rebecca (Gilmore) Hughes in rural Panora, Iowa. She graduated from Panora High School class of 1947 in Panora, Iowa. Following high school, she worked as a secretary for Panora High School until she met John J. Roland. The couple was married on June 28, 1964, at the Chistian Church in Panora, Iowa. The couple made their home in Ames, Iowa. They were blessed with two children, a son, Roger, and a daughter, Martha.
Dolores was a homemaker for her family. She took great pride in caring for her family’s every need. Dolores was an amazing cook and loved hosting family for holidays and special occasions. Dolores loved sending greeting cards, and enjoyed visiting and going out to eat with friends and family. When meeting new people at the end of the conversation she would have a new friend. Dolores was a die-hard Iowa State University sports fan, especially ISU Men’s and Women’s Basketball and ISU Football. She also enjoyed playing solitaire, doing puzzle books, sewing, planting flowers, but most of all she loved spending time with her family.
Dolores was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Nora Hughes; her husband, John J. Roland; sister, Doris Whisler; brother, Delbert Hughes; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James “Jim” and Irene Sears. She is survived by her son, Roger Roland of Ames, Iowa; daughter, Martha (Jeff) Widen of Nevada, Iowa; grandson, Noah Widen of Ames, Iowa; sister-in-law, Shirley Hughes of Panora, Iowa; and nieces and nephews, Linda Downing of Bondurant, Iowa; Lonnie (Rose) Whisler of Yale, Iowa; Darrell Hughes of Dallas Center, Iowa; and Arlone (Mark) Humphreys of Panora, Iowa.
Memorials may be directed to Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames and they will be given to the quilting group at the church, which Dolores was actively involved.
