

Dorothy Jean Burkheimer, 82, of Ames, died October 10, 2010 at the Madrid Home in Madrid, IA. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 15 at 10:00 a.m. with a visitation from 9 to 10 at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Inurnment will be in the Greenfield, IA Cemetery.
Dorothy Jean Burkheimer was born February 3, 1928 at Grove Township, Greenfield, IA to Cletus J. and Alma E. (Sulgrove) Handley. She attended school at Grove Center Township School and the Greenfield and Menlo High Schools. She received further education from DMACC, Boone, IA.
Dorothy married Ivan Burkheimer at Colorado Springs, CO during World War II. Two sons were born to this union, Gerald (Gary) and Steven (Steve) Burkheimer. Dorothy was a homemaker and raised her two sons. She was active in the Cub Scouts and taught Sunday School. She served as the secretary of the American Legion at Madrid and president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Ames. She was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church. In 1970, Dorothy worked for NADL of the Federal Agricultural Dept. and retired in 1993. After her retirement, she moved to Florida and lived there until 1995.
Dorothy is survived by her two sons, Gary (Helen) of Madrid, and Steve (Jana) of Clarion; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Robert D. and Randall L. Handley.
