Florence “Ann” Bates, 85, of Ames, died on Sunday, October 17, 2010 at the Madrid Home in Madrid, Iowa. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 7 at 1:30 p.m. at the Madrid Home. A private family burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Florence Ann Bates was June 30, 1925 in England to Harry and Emma Herrod. She served her country at the Royal Ordinance Factory in England. They supplied ammunitions to the soldiers during WW II. In Ames, she was employed at Bournes, retiring in 1995.

She married Robert Wood and to this union two children were born. Following his death, she married Arthur Bates, Sr.

She was a member of First Christian Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara LaMotte of Des Moines; son, Kenneth Wood, of Ames; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and two nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; a sister; and a nephew.

Very sorry to hear about your Mom's passing, my condolences to your family. I too always loved to listen to her talk because of her accent, I still can hear her laugh to this day, she will be missed by all who knew her. Our familys always did have a good time when together.

I am so sorry to read about Ann's passing. She was a classy woman. I enjoyed sharing worship with her aqt First Christian Church through the years and admired her. Blessings to the family and friends who gather for the service.

Our condolences on the death of your mother. We have many, many fond memories of her friendship. We loved her accent, her British colloquialisms, and her stories. Ann was a delight! Thank you to Barbara and Ken for the many years of loving care for their mother. Ann will be missed.
