Gregory William Gerstein, age 60, a lifelong resident of Ames, passed away at his home Monday, October 28, 2019. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Friday, November 1, 2019, at Stevens Memorial Chapel (607 28th Street Ames, IA 50010). Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, November 2, 2019, at Stevens Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at Story Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed towards Research to Prevent Blindness.
Greg was born June 2, 1959, in Council Bluffs, IA, to Bernard and Mary Clarice (Coffey) Gerstein. He graduated from Ames High School in 1978, and just recently celebrated his 40th high school class reunion. Greg was on the Ames High cross country team, wrestling team, play makers, and was homecoming king of his senior class. Greg was united in marriage to Barbara Anderson and they welcomed one son, Neil Bernard. Greg was employed by Iowa State University working in maintenance services.
Greg enjoyed cheering on the Cyclones, playing guitar, hiking and fly fishing. He loved all types of water sports, being at the ocean, sailing and traveling (especially to the Caribbean). Most importantly, Greg enjoyed his time spent with friends and family. He was a caring husband and father, generous to a fault and a very beloved, brother and friend to all.
Left to cherish his memory are Greg’s wife, Barbara Anderson; son, Neil Gerstein; father, Bernard Gerstein; siblings: Mark Gerstein, William Gerstein, Beth (Greg) Timm and Garth (Angela) Gerstein, also a brother-in-law, David Anderson; nieces, Aliza, Kylie, Alivia, Natalie and Sedona, one nephew, Alex and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Clarice; brother-in-law, Joe Anderson and mother-in-law, Helen Anderson.
