Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Steven’s Memorial Chapel, 607 28th Street, Ames, Iowa 50010. There will be a one-hour Visitation at the Funeral Home before the service. Burial will be held on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Sheridan Cemetery in Rural Grinnell, Iowa.
James Howard Sears was born on June 16, 1937, in Grinnell, Iowa to Howard Alden and Inez Louise (Cobb) Sears. He graduated from Grinnell High School in 1955. After high school, Jim continued his education at Iowa State College graduating from the College of Agriculture with a bachelor’s degree in agronomy in 1959. While working at Iowa State University Jim met the love of his life, Irene Anita Roland. They were united in marriage on August 25, 1990, at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Hardy, Iowa.
Jim was a corn breeding researcher for the US Government through Iowa State University and the US Department of Agriculture. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, gardening, puzzles and games, watching ISU sports and other sports on tv. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his niece and nephews and making memories with his family. Jim was a past member of the Ames Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, serving as past treasurer and Worshipful Master. Jim was a caring and generous man who had a deep Christian faith. He was known to keep things lighthearted and fun.
Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Irene, and his parents, Howard and Inez. He is survived by his sister, Helen (John) Primus of Concord, California; nephews, Daniel (Bernadette Whitman) Primus of Alameda, California, Michael (Laura) Primus of Pleasant Hill, California, and Roger Roland of Ames; a niece, Martha (Jeff) Widen of Nevada, Iowa and great nieces and great nephews, Noah Widen of Ames, Grace and Zachary Primus of Pleasant Hill, California, Nate and Lani Primus of Alameda, California.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Ames Masonic Lodge, Arcadia Lodge #249, 107 Alexander Ave, Ames, IA 50010.
