Verna Mae Burris

Per her wishes, there will be no service or visitation. A family graveside service at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa will be held at a future date.

Verna Mae was born on August 2, 1931, on her parent’s farm in Woodbury County, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Caroline (Scherner) Herbold. She was welcomed by her brother, Robert Burdette. She grew up on the farm and attended a one room country school through the 8th grade. She then attended Pierson High School, Pierson, Iowa and graduated in 1948.

Upon graduation from high school, she worked at the Farmers Savings Bank in Pierson, Iowa. She moved to Sioux City in 1949 and was united in marriage to Merle H. Burris, Jr. on September 6, 1951, at the Federated Church in Moville, Iowa. They were blessed with three children, Bradley, Sherrie, and Jeffrey.

Verna was a member of St. James United Methodist Church in Sioux City, now known as St James Global Methodist Church, since 1953.

In Sioux City, she was employed at Morningside State Bank, Security National Bank, and the Morningside Coast to Coast Store. Her last 15 years of employment were at First Federal Savings and Loan, now Great Southern Bank. She retired in 1994.

Verna lived in Sioux City from 1949 to 2006, then moved to Ames, Iowa. Her husband, Merle, passed away in 2011. In 2016, Verna moved to Huxley, Iowa to live with her son, Jeffrey, and his family where she resided until her passing.

Verna is survived by her sons, and their wives, Bradley and Catherine Burris of Pipestone, Minnesota and Jeffrey and Kandi Burris of Huxley, Iowa; grandchildren, Jason, Olivia, and Noah Burris of Pipestone, Minnesota, Jennifer Burris of Fargo, North Dakota, Madison and Emily Burris of Huxley, Iowa, Rebecca (Bernie) Lieser of Lincoln, Nebraska, Todd (Kayla) Wingert of Fonda, Iowa, Michelle Schol of Boulder, Colorado; great grandchildren, Kadence, Makenna, Kinslee and Aston Lieser of Lincoln, Nebraska, Vienna and Jet Wingert of Fonda, Iowa; nieces, Debra Guzman of Bend, Oregon and Lisa Fischer of Running Springs, California and a nephew, Rob Herbold of Sun City, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, beloved daughter, Sherrie Schol, and a brother and his wife, Robert and Mildred Herbold.
