Ann was born in Fairforest, South Carolina in 1936. She was raised by a single mother, Charlotte Caldwell Compton, having lost her father at the age of six years. She graduated from Fairforest High School in 1953. She received a full scholarship to Winthrop College from which she received a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work.
Ann married Fred Wilson Medlin of Chester, South Carolina in 1957. They moved together to Salisbury, NC in 1963 where they raised their four children and established a place of business at Towne Pharmacy (now Moose Pharmacy).
Ann dedicated her professional life advocating on behalf of the intellectually and developmentally disabled in Rowan County and the State of North Carolina. She served as Director of the Rowan County Association for Retarded Citizens (now The Arc of North Carolina Triad Region) from 1972-1985. She served as Administrator at RHA Health Services from 1985-97.
Ann was active in community service throughout her life. She served on the Board for the Arc of Rowan County, (President, 2003-2005); Rowan Vocational Opportunities (RVO) (2001-2009 and 2012-2016), and the American Association of University Women (President, 1993-1995). She also served on the Rowan Vocational Opportunities Clients’ Rights Committee, the Piedmont Behavioral Healthcare Client Rights Committee, the Tri-County Mental Health Advisory Committee, and the Consumer Family Advisory Committee. She was appointed to the North Carolina Legislative Blue Ribbon Commission on Transitions to Community Living in 2012.
Ann was also a highly skilled handweaver and Master gardener.
She moved to Apex, NC in 2020 and loved spending time with her family; especially her great-granddaughter, Michaela.
Ann is preceded in death by her husband Fred. She is survived by her sister, Mary Henry, of Inglis, FL, and her four children, Fred Wilson Medlin Jr. and wife Denice of Apex, NC, Katherine Lynn Perkins and husband Richard of Millbrook, NY, Carol Ann Medlin of Falls Church, VA, and Mary Charlotte Medlin of Salisbury, NC; three grandchildren, Jacob Amos Medlin and wife Jennifer of Apex, NC, Jeremy Medlin and wife Lindsay of Burlington, NC, and Clay Perkins of Millbrook, NY; and great-granddaughter, Michaela Rose Medlin of Apex, NC.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be sent to The Arc of North Carolina Triad Region located in Salisbury, NC.
