Anne (or Annemarie to her brothers and sisters) was born July 25, 1949, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to James and Olive Barnes, the second of 7 siblings. She attended Triton High School in Runnemede NJ where she enjoyed playing softball and field hockey (and showing off her dancing talent in the local 1965 Junior Miss Pageant) before graduating in 1967. She attended Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) in New Jersey, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education and enjoyed swimming, playing lacrosse (earning an invitation to the Olympic Trials), and competing in archery (becoming nationally ranked).
She graduated in 1971 to start her teaching and coaching career in New Jersey (and would fondly recall shenanigans of her softball team from those days). She was married to Bob in 1975, lived briefly in the Groton, CT area, and moved to Palmyra, NY in 1976. After taking time off to focus on her young daughters, Anne then worked as a bank teller, heating oil company employee, and substitute teacher, and obtained her MS in Computer Science from Nazareth College (now University) in Rochester, NY. She resumed her teaching and coaching career with Canandaigua City Schools, teaching health education at Canandaigua Academy and was a driving force for initiation of New York State’s Section V girls lacrosse, serving as the inaugural coach for the Canandaigua Academy Girls Varsity team.
She supported the sport of girls lacrosse more widely through New York State through her efforts to coach at various girls lacrosse summer camps at Hobart and William Smith Colleges and Colgate University, and the Empire State games during the 1990s. The local Canandaigua VA hospital golf course was also where Anne started to rekindle her earlier interest in the sport of golf. She enjoyed volunteering to support LPGA events at the nearby Locust Hill Country Club on several occasions. In 2005, Anne retired from teaching and coaching and moved with Bob to North Carolina to be closer to their daughters as well as year-round golfing weather.
After briefly exploring a second career as an independent living facility manager with Bob, Anne decided she needed to focus her full time efforts on developing her golf game and they joined the Bentwinds Golf Club in Fuquay-Varina where she spent many hours golfing with good friends. In 2014, Anne made her first ever visit to Bald Head Island, and in 2015 the family purchased a villa on the Island. Anne spent the next 10 years living her best life with countless hours at Bald Head Island, enjoying the ocean breezes, the golf course, the croquet greenswards, and the game of mahjong. She loved the Bald Head community and the ladies’ Diamonds in the Rough golf tournament was the highlight of her golf activities each year. Despite numerous health obstacles throughout her adult life, Anne was determined to enjoy every moment she could with friends and family. She relished her time as a grandmother and hours of card games with family and friends, catching the latest episodes of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!, the occasional Jersey tomato (the only vegetable other than mashed potatoes she allowed to pass her lips!), and of course, Tastykake snacks.
Anne is preceded in death by her parents, James and Olive, and her husband, Bob.
Anne is survived by her her loving daughters, Jessica Sherlock and Kate (Mark) Auernik, her grandson Daniel Auernik, her siblings Katie, Charlotte, Maggie, Jimmy, Mike, Joe, and their families.
The family invites friends to a memorial service at 10:00am on Friday September 12th in the chapel of Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams Street, Apex NC, 27502, with a visitation hour following. A private family burial will follow that afternoon at Eastern Carolina Veterans State Cemetery.
