Wayne lived a Christ-centered life and was an active member of Apex Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, spent several years teaching third-grade Sunday school with his wife, and was a member of the Brewer-Cessna Sunday school class.
His love of baseball was shown from being on numerous softball teams throughout his life from Western Wake Hospital, Apex Baptist, Disturbing Elements, and several other teams sometimes playing in three different leagues at a time.
An artist at heart, he had remarkable creativity that was shown through paintings, building WWII model airplanes, creating intricate Halloween costumes, and turning Christmas decorations into something truly magical.
Wayne never met a stranger, he had a genuine love for people. He created meaningful friendships with those he met on the softball field and through his church involvement. He also had a tender heart towards animals shown by the many pets, especially his cat Tango, that he loved in life.
Above all he loved his family deeply, and his grandchildren held an especially treasured place in his heart. The faith, kindness, humor, and love he shared with his family and the many people whose lives he touched will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. Until we meet again.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 47 years, Carol Kulp Weichel; daughters, Kristen Trask (Roland), Jennifer McCarthy (Conor), and Megan Weichel; grandchildren, Audrey, Molly, Hudson, Braeden, and Vivian; brother Reed Weichel, brother-in-law David Kulp (Robin), and brother-in-law Kenneth Kulp.
Family will receive friends and guests on Friday, October 16, 2026 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Apex Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Apex Baptist Church with burial to follow at Apex Cemetery.
