Barbara Ann Norquest, née Getz, age 78, passed away on May 14th, leaving behind a life filled with love, laughter, sharp insight, and an honest, no-nonsense approach to the world. The eldest child of Robert and Carmeta (Nellis) Getz of Nelliston, NY, Barbara grew into the kind of person who could steady a room with her presence and brighten it with her quick wit and good-humored approach to everything that came her way.
For more than 30 years, Barbara worked as a psychiatric nurse at Spring Grove Hospital in Catonsville, Maryland, offering comfort, dignity, and a steady hand to those who needed it most. She had a remarkable ability to truly understand people and was a great listener. She had a true passion for caring for others and she believed deeply that everyone, regardless of their background, deserved to have their story heard.
Barbara loved books, puzzles, art, travel, and good conversation. She had a special affection for animals of all kinds, with a particular soft spot for Highland cows, which never failed to make her smile. Among all the places she explored, Nubble Light in Maine was by far her favorite - a spot that reflected her love of beauty, calm, and large lobsters. She had a gift for making the world feel accessible, often serving as an unofficial tour guide wherever she went; always ready with a recommendation, a story, or a new place to discover. She kept current on so much and could talk about everything from Paris to the Backstreet Boys to Greek architecture. To many, she was a guiding hand offering perspective, direction, and a steady sense of what truly mattered.
However, Barbara’s greatest pride and accomplishment was her family. She will be greatly missed by her husband of 44 years, Bob Norquest, her true partner in every sense of the word. Barbara had a way of keeping Bob on his toes - forming a partnership that was equal parts laughter, debate, companionship, and unwavering devotion. They were each other’s sounding board, travel companion, late-night conversation partner, and safe place to land. Their bond was rare, real, and deeply felt by anyone who saw them together.
She is also survived by her daughter Tiffany (Joe) Rusnak of Holly Springs, NC, who was not only her child but her best friend and treasured their daily talks; and her two greatest joys, her granddaughter Alex (17) and grandson Logan Rusnak (14). She also leaves behind her loving “little” brother, Robert (Mary Ann) Getz of Mayfield, Kentucky, and several cousins, nieces, and family members across the country. Barbara was a constellation—bright, steady, and impossible to forget—and she will be remembered by many friends and countless people whose lives she touched.
In keeping with her wishes, there will be no traditional services. The family will host an intimate gathering on Saturday, May 30th, at the family home to celebrate her life, her humor, and the love she shared so generously.
In lieu of flowers and traditional remembrances, the family invites you to honor Barbara by carrying forward her kindness, her honesty, and her belief in living with purpose.
