

Edie was born on July 6, 1941 in Essex, NJ to the late Douglas and Ruth L’Hommedieu. She graduated from Tioga Central School in Tioga Center, NY (Class of 1959) and earned her Registered Nurse certification from Binghamton General Hospital (Class of 1962). She married her high school sweetheart James Dewey Sr. on June 23, 1962.
Throughout her life, she forged a remarkable journey filled with dedication and service. She began her illustrious nursing career in the operating room at Methodist Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, showcasing her early commitment to healthcare. Her service extended to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, where she devoted herself as a staff nurse, offering care and compassion to those in need. Her passion for pediatric care led her to become a valued pediatric nurse at the office of Dr. Stanley Miegs in Huntsville, AL, where she touched the lives of countless children and their families. Her career path continued with roles as a staff nurse at Riverview nursing home in Owego, NY, and later as the esteemed director of nurses at the Vestal Nursing Home in Vestal, NY, where her leadership and expertise shone brightly. A pinnacle of her career was her retirement, marked by 20 years of devoted service as the middle school nurse at Tioga Central School in Tioga Center, NY, where her nurturing spirit and dedication to the well-being of students became an indelible part of the school's legacy.
Edie's commitment to her church was profound, demonstrated through her long standing membership and active engagement in various church activities, including the Wesleyan Sunday School, the walking group, and notably, her instrumental role in planning and constructing the columbarium at the Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church. Edie's life was adorned with a deep passion for music, evident through her active participation in various choirs and ensembles at the church. She joyfully co-directed numerous school musicals, plays, and variety shows, infusing her artistic flair into each performance.
Beyond her musical endeavors, she generously devoted her time as the varsity cheerleading coach and official scorekeeper for the Tioga Central School's girl's varsity volleyball team, fostering team spirit and sportsmanship. Her dedication extended beyond sports to community involvement, where she played a pivotal role in founding the Athletic Booster Club at Middle Creek High School in Cary, NC. Her contributions were celebrated with the honor of receiving "Coach of the Year'' from the Tioga Central School Athletic Booster Club and a lifetime membership to the Middle Creek Athletic Booster Club, recognizing her outstanding service and unwavering dedication.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother-in-law, William Heim.
Her legacy will live on in the love she had for her family.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, James Addison Dewey Sr.; brother, Douglas L’Hommedieu (Patsy); sister, Judy Heim; daughters, Tina Hobbs (Kevin) and Amy Wolcott (Michael); son, James Dewey Jr. (Karen); grandchildren, Jeremy Keene (Rudi), Stephanie Hayes (Greg), Rhiannon Dewey, Delaney Dewey, Abigail Dewey, Ashley Fide (Chris), Nichole Wolcott, Stephanie Sanville (Brett), Michael Wolcott, and Austin Wolcott (Madison); 15 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; and special friends Bob and Peggy Roach and Craig and Ginny Chilcott.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation to Angie and Jennifer at Gentiva Hospice and the staff of the Memory Care unit at The Addison at Fuquay-Varina for their loving, compassionate care for Edie and support for our family.
Services will be held at Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church on January 6, 2024 at 11:00 AM. Family will visit prior to the service from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions can be made in honor of Edie to the Columbarium Fund at Fuquay Varina United Methodist Church, 100 S Judd Pkwy SE, Fuquay Varina NC 27526.
