My dear friend Chin,
Though you miss him terribly, you know Gene is in better place now.  It’s assurance of God, and He only takes the best!
So we can celebrate his well-lived life together.
In my mind, Gene was a genuine gentleman who had a heart of gold, and he was a man of compassion and empathy.  When you and Gene drove over 400 miles without hesitation upon hearing of Jim’s illness, I was speechless.  Not only you made such long distances in  a one-day trip, but also unloaded a trunk full of groceries with all sorts of Korean food!
You were there for a friends who was going through the bottom of valley of life.  Like God sent angels, you and Gene extended your hands to lift a friend with all your strength and all your hearts.
Gene, we shall all meet again in heaven someday.  Until then, rest in peace!
Chin, you are in my thoughts, and I love you!

Chin and Family -  
You and Gene have been our dear friends since 1981 when we worked together at the Yongsan Data Processing Center (YDPC) in Seoul, Korea.  I remember Gene bringing you fresh donuts every morning because he was so enamered by you Chin.
I could write a book about our adventures together over the decades!
We know we will see Gene in heaven some day when our Lord seems fit.   You, Chin, have been an angel on earth for Gene.

Today, my wife, Berni, and I remember and honor Sergeant Major Gene Nittenger — a soldier’s soldier, a trusted friend, and a man of quiet strength and unwavering dedication.

Sergeant Major Nittenger and I served together in Korea, where his intelligence, commitment, and mission focus stood out in everything he did. Sergeant Major had a brilliant mind for innovation — always finding ways to meet the automation and technology needs of our subordinate Army units, always looking for solutions that made the mission stronger and the team better.

But beyond the uniform, Gene was a true friend. My wife and I shared many good times with him and his lovely wife, Chin,  — moments filled with laughter, great conversation, and genuine care. He was steady, loyal, and kind, the kind of friend you could always count on.

I remember him today not just for his service, but for his spirit — a spirit that continues to inspire everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he may be gone, his example remains — in the lives he touched, the soldiers he mentored, and the memories we hold close.

Sergeant Major Gene Nittenger — I salute you. Your service, friendship, and legacy will never be forgotten.

Dear Aunt,
I want to send you my deepest sympathy and words of comfort as you say goodbye to Uncle.
Even though I’ve been in Korea and Uncle was in the U.S., and it’s been so long since I last saw him, thinking back to the short but precious memories from my childhood brings tears to my eyes.
I can only imagine how deep your sorrow must be after all the years you spent by his side.

To me, Uncle was always such a wonderful person.
He always had a comb in the pocket of his shirt, and I still remember his neatly groomed hair and handsome face.
He was tall, strong, and I’ll never forget the time he pushed me on the swing — it was a little scary, but so much fun.
He also spoke English so well and used to teach me on weekends. He was truly a great uncle.

Although he has passed away, I don’t believe he’s gone forever.
I believe he’s now in a higher place, watching over you and smiling from above.
I hope you can find comfort in his love and memories, and that his warmth continues to give you strength.
