Geraldine "Jerrie” Mills Murray

Geraldine "Jerrie" Mills Murray, 89, died on December 27, 2020. She succumbed to dementia and age with the same gentleness and kindness exhibited throughout her life. Born in the Green Level Community of Wake County, she was the youngest of four daughters of the late Garland Thaddeus Mills and Lizzie (Usry) Mills.

Jerrie grew up on a tobacco farm in Green Level and attended the original Green Hope School where in first grade she met the future father of her three sons, Jimmie Edwards. Married at age sixteen and a mother at eighteen, Jerrie often described how she and her friends treated her firstborn child like a doll baby. Midlife, she owned and operated Edwards Florist in Apex, NC. A blind date would lead Jerrie to her second loving husband, Horace Murray, who blessed her with a second family, a stepson and stepdaughter. Jerrie and Horace enjoyed many years living on the water at Kerr Lake and then Emerald Isle.

The family thanks the staff at Phoenix Assisted Living, Heartland Hospice and Doctors Making House Calls for providing tireless and excellent care and for protecting the entire Phoenix community from COVID.

Jerrie is survived by three sons, Michael Edwards (Erin), Rickey Edwards (Marty) and Garry Edwards (Jeanne). Two stepchildren, Teresa Schneider (Joe) and Greg Murray (Robin). Eight grandchildren, Caroline Nickel (Wiley), Carl Edwards (Line), Hannah Edwards, Steven Edwards (Lauren), Chesley Edwards, Zack Edwards, Brittany Murray and Laura Emory (Chris). Five great grandchildren.

Jerrie’s family is under the care of Apex Funeral Home where flowers can be sent. A private family funeral service will be held 1pm Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St., Apex, NC 27502 with burial to immediately follow the service. Jerrie will be buried near her parents at Olive Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Apex NC. The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.
