Gwendolyn "Gwen" Renee Nelson

Gwendolyn “Gwen” Renee Nelson, 53, entered eternal rest on September 18, 2026. Born October 27, 1972, Gwen lived in Raleigh, North Carolina, and leaves behind a legacy marked by steadfast faith, courageous perseverance, deep love, and a humor that could lighten even the heaviest moments.

Gwen graduated from East Wake High School in Wendell, N.C., and carried forward a bright, hopeful spirit that remained a steady thread throughout her life. Her warmth drew people close, and her laughter—quick, genuine, and often perfectly timed—made others feel at ease and seen.

At the heart of Gwen’s days was what mattered most to her: family. She enjoyed spending time with those she loved and cherished her dog, Harley. Gwen also found joy in creating art, spending time with her pets, and telling others about Jesus—sharing, with sincerity and conviction, the reason for her hope.

Gwen was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Haywood and Betty Stephenson, and her uncle, Haywood Stephenson Jr. She is survived by her mother, Frances Benson; sister, Audra McRae (Sean); nephew, Tyler McRae (Andrea); aunt, Wanda Hayes; and uncle, Mark Stephenson (Mindy).

Gwen will be remembered for her love for her family, her positive disposition, and the way she openly shared what she believed—offering encouragement that was both uplifting and real, grounded in faith and given with a loving heart.

The family would like to thank UNC Lineberger Cancer Hospital’s Bone Marrow Transplant Team for their amazing care, support, and endless compassion; UNC SECU Hospice House- Johnston County for their dedication to caring for patients and their families; Wanda Hayes for her dedication in caring for Gwen; and Michelle Reynolds for her many years of support.
