Helen Marshburn, 97, of Morrisville, NC, went to be with Jesus on Sunday, November 28th, 2010. She was born in Wendell, NC on March 17th, 1913, the baby daughter of John Robert Medlin and Annie Rebecca Horton Medlin.
Helen married one of her childhood sweethearts, DC Marshburn, in 1934. They started their family in Bethesda and moved to Morrisville in 1951. They both continued to work “public jobs” while they farmed “on the side”. DC always said she was the best “better half” that a husband could ever have, especially after she finished raking the hayfield.
Helen leaves behind her children and their spouses: Bobby & Betty, Peggy, Rebecca & Glennie, Gayle & Jimmy, Rickey & Karen, and Randy & Robyn. She was the world’s best Grandma to her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. In fact, most people called her “Grandma”. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, siblings, Clyde Wall, Wilma Pleasants, Annie Alford, and Joe Medlin and two son-in-laws, Roland Goodwin and John Medlin.
Helen was an active member of Sorrell’s Grove Baptist until she became home bound. She was a charter member of Central Baptist Church in Wendell, and a former member at Bethesda Baptist and First Baptist Morrisville. More than a church member, Helen lived her faith in Christ. She saved her dimes, and gave each one to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. She taught at church, went on mission trips to Jamaica and Guatemala, cared for the sick, gave to anyone in need, shared from her garden and her freezer, loved every one unconditionally and always prayed for those she loved.
Helen taught her children to treat others the way you would like to be treated. Perhaps this is why all six children were actively involved in taking care of their Mama when she needed them. Next to her love for God and her family, Helen loved to garden. Even when bedridden, she would lament that she was so tired because she had been working in the garden all day. In spite of the many ailments that came with old age, Helen was never one to complain, choosing to smile instead. Helen will always be remembered for her love of Burger King burgers, hard work, her love of gardening, her hard hat, her Christian life, her laugh and her smile.
The family will receive friends from 12 noon – 2 PM on Tuesday, November 30th at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W Williams St, Apex 27502. A celebration of her life and homecoming will be held immediately following visitation.
While flowers are welcomed, memorial contributions may be made to the Bryan Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, 2200 West Main St, Suite A-200, Durham, NC 27706.
