Hilda Jean Barker, 73, passed away on February 18, 2012 at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh. Born on August 12, 1938 in New Hill, NC; she was the daughter of the late John Hollie Barker and Vila Belle Melton Barker.
Hilda graduated from East Carolina University with a business degree and went on to receive two Master’s Degrees from UNC-Greensboro as a Public Librarian and Public School Librarian. She taught 9th grade math and business courses and retired from the Franklin County Library as the Director of Libraries. Hilda was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy - Pittsboro Chapter and very active in the Friends of North Carolina Public Libraries (FONCPL).
She was also known for her involvement in the Olive Chapel Baptist Church, where she has been a member for many years.
Those remembering Hilda include her children, Hollie Ann Vanderlei, of Willow Spring and Rheth Alexander Fish, of Eden; their father, James L. Fish, of Willow Spring; grandchildren, Adeline B. Vanderlei, Charisse Blackwell, Destiny Fish and Maliyah Fish; brother, Kenneth Barker, of New Hill; nephews, Matt and Lauren Barker, of Egg Harbor Township, NJ and Kent Barker, of New Hill; and by other family and friends, including, Wayne Horton and his family.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 7-9 PM at Apex Funeral Home in Apex. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 2 PM at Olive Chapel Baptist Church (600 New Hill Olive Chapel Road in Apex, NC), with interment to follow at the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Olive Chapel Baptist Church Building Fund, the American Heart Association or the Mabopane Foundation - 3913 Hwy 64 - Apex, NC 27502.
