Jane Stewart Verster

On August 13, 2026, Jane Stewart Spain Verster heard that bell, and it tolled for her. She had known for some time that this toll was coming: she responded to the call and departed this world and all of us in it. She will be joining her previous spouse, George Spain, in that faraway place we all hope to be someday. Not only will she see her previous spouse, but her four sisters and the brothers have also heard the call.

It has been many a year journey for Jane, yet she knew with each passing day, her time to hear that clarion call would be loud and clear. Leaving was not easy for her, and she knew that she would feel the deep longing and emptiness to do so - but the bell was clear and so she had to say goodbye to all of us in her own way. We will miss her most terribly, but we know that someday we too shall hear the bell toll.

Jane loved her family - daughter Marilyn Langdon and grand daughter Lisa Phillips, and the many friends that she had over the years living in Apex; each had a special place in her memory - from the cook and waitress from Spain's Restaurant to the managers of the oil terminals many states away from her days as president of the company her husband owned. Jane had some unusual attributes as a female growing up in the 70's and onwards; she had this never ended quest to know things, to know what, when, why, and mostly, why not!

She owned a hair salon, managed 2 restaurants, owned a dry cleaner, and was president of Systems Engineering. She also became the first female representative in the local Rotary Club and on the Board of Central Carolina Bank. Her curiosity opened up doors, and she enjoyed stepping into the unknown. Once, she had heard and read about the stock market, and she so promptly got her toes wet and opened an account.

Jane met her present husband, Frank, while he was on assignment in Apex for Exxon Oil. They were blessed to find in each other a need that was filled, and they married in 1976. They have loved each other deeply and long through the ups and downs of life and business. Jane loved doing things, going places, meeting people, and she always had questions that she inevitably found answers to. She loved her Bridge-playing buddies whom she trusted and cared for deeply - loving the many hours spent playing Bridge and the many laughs shared when searching for the elusive "Grand Slam with 13 points!"

Know we will not forget you, Jane. We will hold dear the many memories and stories that we know about you. All a treasure - along with your laugh and smile!

... And so we say, "Goodbye, Jane... Godspeed. Best wishes, and we loved you so!"

A memorial service will be held at Apex Funeral Home on Friday, August 28th 2026 at 11am, followed by a reception and visiting hours for friends and family. Please join us!
