Janet was born Janet Lou Cartwright on May 14, 1939, in Wellston, Ohio, to the late Adrian and Lucille Cartwright. Her life took her from Wellston to Dresden, Ohio, and eventually to Fuquay-Varina, which she called home for more than two decades.
During her years in North Carolina, Janet worked as a cashier at JCPenney and Kroger.
Janet enjoyed life most when it included good music, a road trip, and people she loved. She attended several George Strait Country Music Festivals, Garth Brooks shows, and an impressive 18 New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) concerts with her daughter. One particularly memorable adventure took her from Ohio to Boston with a carload of young NKOTB fans in search of the neighborhoods and landmarks connected to the band.
Her adventurous spirit also made her a regular participant in NASCAR trips, races, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. autograph sessions. Along the way, she earned the affectionate nickname “Posse Momma.” She wasn’t merely along for the ride—she became part of the group and part of what made each adventure memorable.
Janet was also an exceptional baker. Her award-winning chocolate peanut butter streusel pie earned recognition, while her beloved sugar cookies became a treasured part of family holiday traditions. At gatherings, everyone eagerly awaited Janet’s arrival—and the cookies they knew would arrive with her.
She proudly embraced her role as “Golden Grandma” to the family’s Golden Retrievers, Chase, Levi, and Wrangler. She loved each of them dearly, and they brought her companionship, laughter, and many happy memories through the years.
Janet will be remembered for her dependable presence, her willingness to join the fun, the traditions she created, and the many ways she made ordinary moments more memorable.
She is survived by her daughter, Melissa “Missy” Birkhimer; her son, Jeff Wilbur; her grandchildren, Amanda Wilbur and Marcus Wilbur; her brother, Irv Cartwright and his wife, Rose; and other extended family members and friends.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Adrian and Lucille Cartwright; her son, Jerry Wilbur; her sister, Janice Carpenter; and her brother, Frank Cartwright.
Janet’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Carver Living Center and Transtions LifeCare for the kindness, care and companionship they provided during her final months.
A celebration of Janet’s life will be held at Apex Funeral Home on Friday, May 14, 2027, which would have been her 88th birthday. The date is especially meaningful because 88 was one of Janet’s favorite numbers, reflecting her love for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Additional service and reception details will be shared at a later date.
