Jeanne, a proud Italian-American, was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1915, among the elder of 21 children born to her parents, Angelo and Angelina LeGreca. As a beautiful, spunky young lady, Jeanne brought spaghetti dinners to the neighborhood firehouse. It was there that she met dashing New York City fireman Walter Voss, whom she would marry, loving him and keeping him happily on his toes until his passing in 1978. Jeanne and Walter had two children, a son, Robert, who passed in 2002, and a daughter, Joan, who lives in Cary with her husband, Wes.
Always a caring voice for the underdog, a community leader and a patriot, Jeanne was very active civically and politically throughout her life. She was an Air Raid warden during World War II, a scout leader, Sunday School teacher and Red Cross volunteer. Jeanne worked for more than 25 years at Con Edison power company in New York City. She was a strong voice for women’s equality in the work place and was the first woman to achieve management status at Con Edison.
Throughout her life, Jeanne was also an enthusiastic and talented performer, singing in her youth with the Sweet Adelines and entertaining her family and friends with renditions of her favorite numbers, “Minnie the Moocher” and “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, at countless gatherings.
When her husband became ill, she retired, and they moved to Milford, Connecticut to be near their daughter, Joan, and her family. While living in Milford, Jeanne again was active in the community serving in many volunteer and political capacities, among them, as a Housing Commissioner and a leader in the local Republican Party. When her daughter moved to North Carolina, in 1998, Jeanne was up to the challenge of a new adventure. She lived in Independence Village in Raleigh before taking up residence at Cary Health and Rehab.
Jeanne led a very full life and her family and friends will always cherish their many happy memories of this incredible mother, grandmother, friend and advocate. Jeanne leaves behind her daughter Joan Pierce and son-in-law, Wes; her daughter-in-law, Beryl Voss; three grandchildren, Susan Giamportone, Wesley C. Pierce, and Jesse Van Geison; three great-grandchildren, Sarah and Samantha Pierce and Harry Van Geison. And a wonderful extended family of close and beloved friends she had throughout her gift of a 96 year adventure. She will be sorely missed and forever loved.
The family will greet friends beginning at 1:00 pm Thursday, December 1, 2011 at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. Apex, NC 27502. A memorial service will be at 1:30 pm Thursday, December 1, 2011.
